WHAT HAPPENS AT A NATURAL VOICE WORKSHOP ?

Big Sing Cambridge

If you can speak you can sing!

Worry, anxiety, self consciousness, low self esteem (somebody in your past ridiculing your efforts to sing)  create tension in the  mind, the body, the breath and the voice. These feelings and thoughts get in the way of the natural expression of your own unique voice.
This is very natural and human. We use gentle physical warm ups to release this tension.
Following this we do some gentle breath work to release the tension on the breath and to help the participants support their voices. This prevents vocal injury and brings a sense of calmness.
Then vocal warm ups which are fun and creative bring light hearted release and also 'oil up' the voice for what is to come.

A sense of being a group, a community of singers evolves and we're ready for  more fun  and challenges.

Nobody sings alone , unless they really want to! No experience is necessary. We share all the music by ear.

A variety of rhythmic/melodic/harmonic improvisations  provide a creative space throughout the workshop  for everyone to explore and  develop their innate creativity within this vocal community. Woven sound sculptures, improvised songs, vocal expression, sound baths..................................................

Leave your inner critic outside the door!

Then we  might look at some songs from many genres. They can be as diverse as soul, blues, pop, traditional songs, world music form a variety of areas. Through these we explore different vocal techniques, musical/harmonic structures and modes of  artistic expression that in our modern world have been all but lost!

Singing is your birth right! It's good for your health!

A great mystique has been built up around singing and music making. Like any skill it can be learnt ! Putting aside the mystery and perhaps a propensity for the art, it's actually graft and  a willingness to find and share your inner truth that makes the resulting music worth listening to.
Think of Bob Dylan. He expressed the feelings of a generation and made no claim to have the voice of a Pavarotti or Caruso - but boy can he sing!

It's the motivation, the generosity of heart that sings the song in order  that the listener's cry from the heart is understood and expressed. A big Ego only gets in the way, the song cannot get through!

Ultimately whatever the group want to explore shapes the content of the workshop.
Facilitation based on fun and new ways of exploring music, song, improvisation, and  creative expression creates space for this evolution to take place.

There is a lot of confusion about what being tone deaf means. The Kodaly Teachers from Hungary state that if all tones/notes sung or played in a piece of music sound the same to you, that is there is no differentiation between  high and low tones/pitches in the listener's perception then you are tone deaf.  Often people think if they sing a bit off pitch that they are tone deaf. This is not true. Pitching can be learned with persistence , dedication, repitition and a good sense of humour.
